Healthy Skin Over Fair Skin: An Indian Perspective
In India, generations have grown up hearing phrases like "She is beautiful because she is fair" or "A fair complexion improves marriage prospects." Television advertisements, films, and social attitudes have often reinforced the idea that lighter skin is more attractive or successful. As a result, fairness creams became a part of daily life for millions of Indians.

However, skin colour is determined largely by genetics and the amount of melanin in our skin. Melanin is not a flaw to be corrected; it is nature's protection against the strong sunlight that much of India experiences throughout the year. From the wheatish skin tones of North India to the rich brown complexions of South India, Indian skin comes in a beautiful range of shades.

The real goal of skincare should not be fairness but health. Healthy skin is well-hydrated, protected from excessive sun exposure, and cared for with proper nutrition and hygiene. Drinking enough water, eating fruits and vegetables, sleeping well, exercising regularly, and using sunscreen are far more beneficial than chasing a lighter complexion.

Some skin-lightening products, especially those used without medical advice or for prolonged periods, may irritate the skin or damage its natural protective barrier. The desire for fairness should never come at the cost of skin health.

Fortunately, attitudes in India are changing. More people are celebrating natural skin tones and rejecting colour-based beauty standards. Parents, schools, and the media all have a role in teaching children that confidence, character, and health matter far more than complexion.

Fairness is not an achievement. Healthy skin is.
