Care of Skin during Herpes Zoster(नागीण or जनेऊ) infection

**Caring for Your Skin During Herpes Zoster Infection: A Comprehensive Guide**

Herpes zoster, commonly known as shingles or नागीण/ जनेऊ  is a painful viral infection caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus. While the primary focus during this infection is often on managing pain and discomfort, it's crucial not to overlook the care of the skin affected by the characteristic rash. In this article, we will explore essential tips for maintaining skin health during herpes zoster infection.

**1. Gentle Cleansing:**
Keeping the affected skin clean is vital in preventing secondary infections. Use a mild, fragrance-free soap and lukewarm water to gently cleanse the rash. Avoid scrubbing vigorously, as this can exacerbate irritation and potentially break open the blisters.

**2. Moisturize Regularly:**
Herpes zoster can cause dryness and itching. Applying a soothing, hypoallergenic moisturizer can help alleviate these symptoms. Do consult with your dermatologist for the correct choice of moisturizer.  Opt for products that do not contain fragrances or harsh chemicals, as these may irritate the sensitive skin affected by the rash.

**3. Cold Compresses:**
To ease pain and reduce inflammation, consider applying cold compresses to the affected area. Wrap ice in a clean cloth and place it gently on the rash for short periods. Be cautious not to apply ice directly to the skin to prevent frostbite.

**4. Loose and Breathable Clothing:**
Wearing loose, breathable clothing can prevent friction and irritation on the affected skin. Cotton fabrics are a good choice as they allow air circulation and minimize discomfort. Avoid tight clothing that may rub against the rash.
**5. Pain Management:**
Addressing pain is crucial during herpes zoster infection. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help manage discomfort. Consult with your Dermatologist for appropriate recommendations based on your individual health status.

**6. Avoid Scratching:**
Resist the urge to scratch the affected area, as this can lead to further skin damage and increase the risk of bacterial infections. Trim your nails to reduce the likelihood of unintentional scratching.

**7. Antiviral Medications:**
Your Dermatologist may prescribe antiviral medications to speed up the healing process and reduce the severity of symptoms. Adhering to the prescribed treatment plan is essential for effective management of the infection.

**8. Stay Hydrated:**
Drinking an ample amount of water supports overall skin health and aids in the healing process. Adequate hydration is particularly important during illness, as it helps the body recover and maintain optimal functioning.

** 9. Avoid Irritants **
Avoid irritants like home remedies , antiseptic liquids available in local shops .

** 10. Bathing **
It is a common myth that bathing and cleaning should be avoided till lesions are completely healed. Avoid falling trap to this myth.

** 11. Diabetics**
Consult your dermatologist early in the disease process . Blood sugar levels fluctuate greatly during any viral illness . Monitor your sugar levels at home regularlyand stay in touch with your physician. Your physician may change your diabetes medication while you are healing.

** 12. Frequent handwashing **
After touching the lesions of Herpes zoster , patients are advised to wash hands frequently with mild soap.

** 13. Scab **
Once lesions start healing , a scab will form on the dried lesions . Do not remove/scrub the scab .

** 14.** Consultation with Ophthalmologist or Eye Doctor **
Your Dermatologist will refer you to an Ophthalmologist or Eye specialist is the Herpes zoster rash is near the eye .
The virus affects the eye and thus the eyesight too.

By adopting these simple yet effective strategies, you can alleviate discomfort, promote healing, and minimize the risk of complications.
